Clerkin Psychology Services Ltd was formed by Dr Colin Clerkin in 2001. We offer psychological assessment, therapy, coaching and training in response to needs identified by our clients, who clearly have valued the high standards of service offered as we have gone from strength to strength over the years.
In 2017, Dr Maria Knapp, HCPC-registered clinical psychologist, joined the team to the team on a part-time basis. Like Colin, Maria offers psychological assessment and therapy for children and adults.
The team is supported by Ailsa Bourne, Dr Clerkin’s Personal Assistant. Ailsa will be most callers’ first point of contact with the team. She will manage your enquiry thoughtfully and confidentially.
Dr Colin Clerkin has a Psychology Bachelor’s degree and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wales, Bangor. He is an HCPC-Registered Clinical Psychologist, a Chartered Member & Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and an EMDR Europe Accredited EMDR Practitioner. He has also completed Executive Coaching training with the Institute of Leadership and Management.
Colin is an experienced therapist, with 26 years experience as a clinical psychologist in both the NHS and privately. Colin started Clerkin Psychology Services Ltd in 2001, leaving the NHS in 2004 to go full-time into private practice. He offers assessment, therapy, consultation and training to the public, local businesses, insurance companies, and solicitors.
Dr Clerkin introduced Coaching to his services in 2007. He has completed Masters Level training in Executive Leadership and Mentoring with the Institute of Leadership and Management.
He is an Honorary Lecturer on the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training Course at the University of Wales, Bangor, lecturing on Private Practice.
Since beginning his clinical training in 1991, he has conducted assessments and therapy with children, young people, and adults, and their families, referred for a wide range of physical, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Dr Maria Knapp is an HCPC Registered Clinical Psychologist with over 18 years post-qualification experience working in the NHS before moving in to private practice. She has extensive experience and a specialist interest in working with children, young people and adults experiencing psychological difficulties relating to chronic health conditions, medical/surgical treatment, injury and visible difference.
Maria also has experience of neuro-psychological assessment, psychological assessments to inform decision making for surgery and/or medical treatment planning, preparation for surgery (including post-operative support and adjustment) and report writing. She is able to provide a range of assessments and individualised psychological interventions across the life span, drawing upon therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Narrative Approaches.
Maria is a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society.
Instructions / Referrals Considered
Clerkin Psychology Services Ltd offers therapy to individuals, children and adults presenting with a range of difficulties, either self-referred or referred via medical agencies. Dr Clerkin is registered as a Service Provider with AXA PPP Healthcare, Aviva, PruHealth and a number of other agencies.
We are happy to consider instructions from solicitors or case management companies for therapy relating to psychological trauma following road traffic accidents or similar traumatic experiences, subject to agreement of terms.
